Quick Tip Tuesday: Organizing Files on a Gypsy

Happy Tuesday everyone! It's Carissa again with another quick tip.

When I first got into my Cricut Expression and finally bought a Gypsy, I scoured the internet for tutorials and tips. I landed on the amazing blog of Tammy Skinner. I learned a very valuable tip on how to save my files on my Gypsy. If you'd like to read the whole blog entry click here

This is all straight from Tammy's blog!
SUGGESTION FOR ORGANIZING CUTFILES ON GYPSY
I am very careful about what I name my files, because the file folder (only one, no subfolders) stores cutfiles alphabetically starting with uppercase then again with lowercase. I try to 'group' like files... so if I design my own cupcake wrapper and want to use it as a template over and over to make more customizable wrappers, here is how I would name the files:

TEMPLATE - Cupcake Wrapper
TEMPLATE - Cupcake Wrapper - Crowns
TEMPLATE - Cupcake Wrapper - Flowers
TEMPLATE - Cupcake Wrapper - Shamrocks

Notice that the main template does not have a specified image and will appear first in this grouping. Everything else will be alphabetized by the last words and all the Cupcake Wrappers will be grouped together and easy to find. Another example would be cards, here is how I have mine saved:

CARD - Birthday - Cake
CARD - Birthday - Flower
CARD - Birthday - Mom
CARD - Birthday - Superman

Do you get it? The first word is the 'GROUP' you want the file to be in and the second word is the 'TYPE' of cutfile it is and the third word 'DESCRIBES' the file.

I have used this tip since first saving on my Gypsy and all my files are super organized. Love it!

May all your crafting dreams come true!

  1. Just getting more use to the Gypsy and like the tip. Do you use the hyphen '-' as part of the file name?

  3. This is an excellent tip! Wish I had known about it when I got my G as I now have a hard time finding files.

  4. Wonderful, Carissa. I'm so glad you posted this. I was on She's A Sassy Lady and she referred to Tammy's method but I didn't quite know what she was talking about. Now I do! Yay-thank you.

  6. This is a great tip, Carissa! It drives me crazy that there aren't subfolders... and I learned by mistake (when I first got my Gypsy) that upper and lower case file names are stored separately. Your system will really help keep things more organized! Thank you!
